In January 1998, the Governor appointed the Wetlands Restoration Steering Committee by executive letter. The Committee makes recommendations on how to accomplish the goal of the Governor's 1997 Wetlands Restoration Initiative: restoring 60,000 acres of wetland in Maryland lost to sprawl development.
After making its initial recommendations to the Governor in fall 1999, the Steering Committee implemented several short-term projects to benefit wetlands restoration. These included establishing a tracking and reporting system; outreach to corporate sector to set up public/private partnerships; instituting "GREEN" recognition awards; using funds available through the federal Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century (TEA-21); analyzing other funding sources; and undertaking extensive public outreach.
