Formed in June 2002 , the Task Force to Study the Economic Development of the Maryland Seafood and Aquaculture Industries, consists of three work groups: the Executive Committee, the Aquaculture Industry Work Group, and the Seafood Industry Work Group (Chapter 535, Acts of 2002).
The Aquaculture Industry Work Group will assess the status and potential of the Maryland aquaculture industry, including requirements for its enhancement. Aquaculture crops in Maryland include hybrid striped bass, catfish, crawfish, tilapia, trout, oysters, and soft-shell crabs. To strengthen the aquaculture industry, mechanisms for better coordinating agencies of the University of Maryland will be developed by the Work Group. Innovative methods to target commercial production and restore critical aquaculture species also will be studied by the Work Group. In addition, the Work Group will review how other states develop aquaculture.
The Seafood Industry Work Group will study and develop innovative techniques for seafood processing. Besides blue crabs, Maryland's important commercial species include striped bass, bluefish, catfish, croaker, flounder, perch, spot, sea trout, oysters, and soft clams. The Work Group will examine whether existing marketing techniques for these species are being fully used by the seafood industry. It also will review methods that other states have implemented to develop their seafood industries, and devise ways of expanding the local and national markets for Maryland seafood.
Reports of the two Work Groups will be reviewed by the Executive Committee of the Task Force which will integrate their findings and recommendations into the Task Force final report.
